Slick roads cause minor crashes but few problems

1 min read

Road conditions around Christchurch have remained icy for much of this morning, according to Canterbury Police, but caused few problems for motorists.

Road Policing Manager Acting Inspector Glenn Nalder says morning commuters faced slick roads with widespread ice and snow still lying on many city streets, but most drivers have coped well.

"Police have received reports of only a few low-speed nose-to-tail crashes, mostly around city intersections, but fortunately no serious incidents.

"We're extremely pleased that motorists have been following advice to slow down and take care. The use of grit on major routes and intersections has also helped keep road conditions manageable."

However, melting snow and low temperatures mean ice is expected to remain a hazard in some areas for at least another 24 hours, he says.

"In shaded areas the risk of black ice will be high for some time yet. We're particularly urging drivers in rural areas to take care.

"The message for all drivers is - slow down, drive to the conditions, watch your following distances and be extra cautious when cornering and stopping."

Information on road closures and conditions is available from the AA and Christchurch City Council websites.
