Police can confirm that the 72 year-old man who died suddenly at a St Heliers address yesterday is Brian Lindsay Culpan of Tindalls Beach, Rodney
A post mortem was carried out this morning. The coroner has released provisional results which indicate that Mr Culpan died as a result of a neck injury consistent with a fall.
Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin Hooper says "We understand Mr Culpan had been involved in an altercation with a person known to him at the St Heliers address before he died."
A 50 year-old man was arrested and charged with assault last night in relation to the incident and appeared in the Auckland District Court today. He has been remanded on bail and will be reappearing on 2 August. He has been granted interim name suppression.
Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin Hooper says "A Police investigation is continuing and forensic tests are being carried out to provide more clarity around the events leading up to Mr Culpan's death. It is too soon to tell whether any further charges will be laid."
Police remain at the St Heliers address while they complete a thorough scene examination.
