Christchurch Police are warning motorists to be aware of hazardous road conditions with the onset of cold weather.
Canterbury Road Policing Manager Inspector Al Stewart says there have been a number of crashes over the last couple of days as a result of icy roads. Fortunately none of those crashes resulted in serious injuries.
"With the recent frosty mornings the regions roads have been icy in some places," he says. "Motorists need to slow down and be aware of potential hazards.
"Particular care needs to be taken on roads shaded by trees and buildings. Frost and ice can last well into the day in some areas."
"What we want to avoid is a serious injury or fatal crash. By slowing down and driving to the conditions we can ensure that every journey is a safe journey", says Inspector Stewart.
