Blenheim Police and the Fire Safety Officer yesterday completed their investigation at the scene of a suspicious fire at the Ministry of Fisheries offices in Kaikoura.

The fire broke out at 2.30am on Wednesday morning and Police said Molotov cocktails had been thrown through the windows of the building, starting the blaze.

The offices were unoccupied at the time.

Shortly after Police dogs tracked a scent to an address where two men were arrested. A subsequent search warrant was executed at the address and items of interest recovered.

Detective Sergeant Mike Irving of Blenheim Police said the two men have been charged with arson and bail had been opposed. They have been remanded in custody until further appearance at the Blenheim District Court on Tuesday 26 April for a bail application. Further charges may be laid.

He said the pair had been dealt with by Fisheries officers on the day before the fire over alleged poaching and had property seized.
