Christchurch road users urged to be safety conscious

1 min read

Damaged roads, changeable weather and the onset of winter means drivers, cyclists and pedestrians need to be more safety aware as they are moving around Christchurch streets.

"It's really important that people drive to the weather and road conditions," says Inspector Al Stewart, Canterbury Road Policing Manager. "This means keeping your speeds down, especially in earthquake damaged streets.

"Roads are more congested than usual as people get around the city and in and out of the suburbs. We're reminding people to follow the road rules and to allow some extra time to get to places."

Police say all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, need to be extra vigilant with the onset of winter.

Simple safety tips include:
• ensure your vehicle, motorbike or bicycle is safe to operate
• use your lights, including during the day if it is wet
• wear reflective jackets - and if you're a pedestrian then make sure you can be seen by other road users.
