A young boy revived by members of the public at the scene of a crash on SH2 at Maramarua last weekend has died in hospital in Auckland.
He was two-year-old Samuel Tonkin of Auckland.
Flown from the scene of Sunday morning's crash Samuel died of his injuries in Starship Hospital on Wednesday.
Waikato Road Policing Manager, Inspector Leo Tooman, said the loss of any child was tragic but Samuel's death was more so given so many people had combined to try and save him, both at the roadside and then in the hospital.
"Heading into the holiday weekend traffic volumes on SH2 where the crash happened and on other routes to popular holiday spots are expected to be high and we don't want to see a repeat of last weekend's tragedies.
"We're asking drivers to remember to plan for delays, not to get impatient and to stick to the basics such as stay on the left, buckle in, avoid drinking and keep your cool. Our staff will be maintaining a highly visible presence out on Waikato roads but we would prefer not to have to take enforcement actions, rather motorist govern themselves."
