Police are seeking the public's assistance in locating a violent offender on the run in Hamilton following a domestic dispute early this morning.
Acting Senior Sergeant Craig Taylor said two officers went to a Matai St address about 2.45am after reports of a family violence incident.
"On their arrival the male and female Constables found the man at the address and established he was wanted on an existing warrant to arrest, he attempted to flee but was caught a short distance away.
"Struggling with the offender the officers managed to secure handcuffs to one of his wrists but as while attempting to secure the other the woman, who was supposed to have been the victim, came out of the house and attacked them from behind."
Mr Taylor said in the brief period it took to secure their assailant the male, 31-year-old Martin Uta TAHAU, was able to make his escape and is now on the run with the handcuffs still secured to his wrist.
"Both officers only suffered minor injuries in the assault and were able to resume their duties which included placing the woman under arrest for assaulting Police.
"While we treat domestic violence as a priority a reality is that is becoming increasingly common that when staff arrive to help those in need of assistance they turn on those trying to assist them."
Police warn TAHAU has a history of violence and carries and uses firearms and should not be approached.
TAHAU is a male Maori aged 31-years-old, 183cm tall and of medium build.
