A scene investigation is underway and a post-mortem examination will be carried out tomorrow following the suspicious death of a Fijian man in Matamata overnight.
Detective Sergeant Rod Carpinter of the Matamata- Piako CIB said emergency services were called to a residential address in central Matamata shortly after 6.30pm.
"It appears a man, who had been drinking heavily since the previous afternoon, had collapsed at his home and suffered a head injury.
"He was taken inside by family members who noticed he wasn't breathing and they couldn't detect a pulse, an ambulance was called for but despite the efforts of friends, family and paramedics, the man could not be revived."
Mr Carpinter said Police had been called to the street about 45 minutes earlier after reports of two men, including the deceased, arguing.
"The altercation was diffused and both men returned to the address where emergency services were later called to."
Mr Carpinter said Police and forensic experts were expected to complete their examination of the scene today.
"All family members and other parties involved have been thoroughly cooperative and have been assisting the enquiry team with their investigation.
"At this point we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this matter."
