Hamilton sexual assault update 2

1 min read

Police investigating the alleged sexual assault on a young woman in Hamilton's central city bar area early Sunday morning have interviewed two men in relation to the incident.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Thornton of the Hamilton CIB said the men were assisting Police with their enquiries and no-one else was being sought in relation to this matter.

A Police investigation was launched on Sunday after a 23-year-old woman laid a complaint with Police that she had been taken into a car against her will and driven a short distance before being raped by two men.

"We have recovered the vehicle we believe was involved and we've spoken to the two men who were at the scene and are receiving full cooperation from them as we seek to resolve this matter," said Mr Thornton.

While this latest case was progressing Mr Thornton appealed to central city party goers, both men and women, to take appropriate steps to ensure they return home safe.

"Over the past two weeks we've had a number of sexual assaults and aggravated robberies in which the consumption of alcohol has played a part in our victims being unable to give accurate descriptions of the time, place and circumstances of what has happened to them.

"What we're asking is that if you're out and about in town make sure you take steps to ensure everyone in your group gets home alright, consider using that last $20 for a taxi fare rather than over the bar and if someone from your group goes off make sure you know who they've gone off with."

Mr Thornton said Police wanted people to go out and enjoy themselves but not put themselves at risk.

"We want them to have a night to remember, not one to regret."
