Hamilton Police investigating an alleged sexual assault on a young woman by two men early yesterday morning are appealing for anyone with information on what happened to come forward as they seek to find those responsible.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Thornton of the Hamilton CIB said further details had emerged about what had happened following the victim being interviewed.

"What we know is that our victim, a 23-year-old woman, has been drinking in the Central City bar area when she has been led into her a car against her will by two men on Alexandra St some time between 1.30 and 3.15am.

"We believe she was then taken to a service lane behind the Arcadia Building on Worley Pl where she was raped by both men before managing to make her escape."

Mr Thornton said Police had examined CCTV footage of the area around the time of the incident but had thus far been unable to identify the vehicle and were widening the timeframes of their search.

"While this is going on we would ask anyone who remembers seeing anything untoward in the area to contact us.

"The City bar area is very busy around this time with a lot of people moving about and someone may have seen something of value to the case. Likewise there area number of inner-city apartments in the area and residents may have noticed something untoward."

The victim was left severely shaken but unhurt from her ordeal and has been given victim support to help her through her traumatic ordeal.

Anyone with any information on yesterday morning's attack is asked to contact Mr Thornton at the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 858 6200.
