An overnight domestic welfare check being carried out by Hamilton Police soon took another turn when officers discovered an indoor cannabis growing operation next to a baby's bedroom.
Sergeant Jason McKay said officers went to the Branbury Cres home shortly around midnight.
"While officers were checking on the wellbeing of the home's occupants they detected the aroma of cannabis and carrying out a search under the Misuse of Drugs Act discovered an indoor cannabis growing operation.
"Sadly the 26 seedlings and 14 fully grown plants were in a room next to where a baby was sleeping and the baby's clothes were drying on a clothes rack in the growing room."
Mr McKay said a 27-year-old man was arrested on drugs charges and was expected to appear in the Hamilton District Court later this week.
"Last night's incident just goes to show the importance of remaining vigilant when attending domestic matters, earlier in the week we had a colleague assaulted and now we've yet another example of how drugs are interlinked with all types of offending.
"Domestic violence in its own right is not acceptable but cultivating drugs alongside children is also definitely not ok."
