Several people have been arrested following two violent incidents in the west of Hamilton yesterday which left a man in hospital with serious head injuries.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Neville Ross said Police received dozens of calls to the 111 emergency phone service in relation to a large group fighting in the intersection of Killarney and Tuhikaramea Roads about 3.45pm.
"We're very appreciative of all the calls notifying us of what happened and would also like to acknowledge the actions of a man said to have gotten out of his car to go to the aid of a woman lying over the body of an unconscious man who's head was stomped on by someone involved in the fight.
"Detectives are currently working to establish just what caused that altercation and another outside a liquor store on nearby Whatawhata Rd in which a man was attacked by a group believed to have been involved in the earlier incident."
In the second incident a number of knives and tools were recovered in a car belonging to one of the group.
Four people were arrested including three men aged 18-22 who were charged with a variety of offences including fighting in a public place, unlawful assembly, excess breath alcohol and possession of an offensive weapon.
A 15-year-old boy arrested was charged with unlawful assembly.
A 20-year-old man was taken to Waikato Hospital in relation to the first incident suffering serious but non-life threatening head injuries.
Mr Ross said as the inquiry progresses further arrests may follow.
"We need to ensure a clear message is sent out that such behaviour will not be tolerated. Had it not been for the actions of parties who intervened the incidents could have ended with even more serious consequences."
