Waikato Police are urging a motorist who mounted a footpath and headed towards a group of children to escape pursuing officer to surrender himself before he endangers anyone else.

Constable Police Mark Strongman of the Waikato Highway Patrol said officers abandoned a pursuit of a red Subaru WRX on Tomin Rd when the driver mounted the footpath at speed, heading towards a group of children on their way to school.

"Given the risks involved the pursuit was abandoned immediately however the registration number of the car, UB4321 was taken down and that car has not been reported stolen.

"We would ask that owner or whoever was driving that car take stock about what has occurred and contact Police before we make contact with them, not only was this person posing an extreme risk to other road users they put innocent children in peril as well."
