Hamilton Police are working to establish the identity of a woman found dead in a creek in the city yesterday morning.
Senior Sergeant Karl Thornton of the Hamilton CIB said the woman's body was discovered by members of the public in knee deep water in the Waitawhiriwhiri Stream about 11.35am.
"The stream runs below a bank at the bottom of a winding, steep path in Edgecumbe Park, Whitiora.
"It appears she was riding a bike at a fair speed down the steep path, skid marks at the scene suggest she's failed to negotiate a corner and struck a tree before coming to a rest in the stream. Her death is not being treated as suspicious and has been referred to the Coroner while we try and identify her."
Mr Thornton said earlier reports of the deceased being a male aged in his early 20s were incorrect.
"These reports were made prior to the body being moved, the person we are dealing with is a Maori or Polynesian female believed to be aged in her thirties with distinctive frizzy short to medium length hair of medium build about 176cm tall.
"She found wearing a black T-shirt and blue knee length shorts with a light green Tiki necklace around her neck. We're urging anyone who knows someone matching that description to contact us so we can rule them out of our inquiries," said Mr Thornton.
