Child's death was not accidental

1 min read

The death of a two-year-old boy in Wanganui is now being treated as homicide.

Police were called to Wanganui Hospital on the afternoon of Saturday, 24 October following the admission of Karl Perigo-Check. A post mortem examination revealed internal injuries and an investigation was launched to establish how those injuries occurred.

Detective Inspector Chris Bensemann said: "Since Karl's death we have been working closely with medical professionals and making extensive enquiries to obtain a greater understanding of how he might have come by his injuries. As a result of that work we have reached the point where we are satisfied that the injuries could not have been caused accidentally.

"From an investigative point of view this conclusion means little change. Right from the start we have taken the precaution of approaching the situation as we would a criminal investigation to ensure that all available information and potential evidence is secured effectively. We are nearing completion of the investigative phase of the operation and should be in a position in the very near future to evaluate the information we have gleaned and decide on the next course of action."

At this stage no-one has been arrested in relation to the death of Karl Perigo-Check.

A team of 17 detectives is working on the inquiry.
