Several people are currently being interviewed by Police following a crackdown on burglars as the Waikato heads into its busiest period for dwelling burglaries.
Hamilton City tactical Co-ordinator, Senior Sergeant Greg Dunn said traditionally the last quarter of the year saw an upsurge in homes being broken into and Police were determined to nip the trend in the bud.
"What happens is offenders take advantage of property owners heading out to enjoy the sun by heading in and stealing from their homes while the owners are out.
"To that end starting at first light, Hamilton Police launched Operation Persil with the intent of washing up a significant number of the City's dedicated burglars."
Over 30 properties in and around Hamilton were searched early this morning and 18 people arrested, more arrests are anticipated as the operation continues.
"Each person arrested is allegedly linked to dishonesty or violence offences with some implicated in both," said Mr Dunn.
While focusing mainly on the City today's operation is expected to impact on a recent increase of rural burglaries in the Western Waikato.
"Normally when we see an increase in burglaries in Hamilton we also see an increase in break-ins of rural properties or homes in smaller towns in a belt around the City including Ngaruawahia, Cambridge, Morrinsville, Ohaupo and Te Awamutu."
Mr Dunn said while Police are concentrating on larger operations they needed the public's help with the smaller ones.
"Today's operation has taken a number of semi-organised offenders out of circulation but the public can help us deter the opportunist burglars as well.
"Record the serial numbers of your valuables, don't leave your car or home unlocked and get to know your neighbours- that's advice that will work no matter if you live in town or in the country."
And above all Mr Dunn said the key thing was; 'If in doubt- give Police a shout', and dial 111.
