North Shore Police are investigating an incident in the suburb of Takapuna after a police officer was hit by a speeding vehicle early this morning. A police pursuit was in progress.
Police say that at about 4.00 am Tuesday 24 March 2009 a set of road spikes were set up at the intersection of Esmonde Road and Fred Thomas Drive to stop the vehicle in which there were approximately four occupants.
A male police officer at the intersection was struck by the offending vehicle. The officer is in hospital with injuries that are not considered to be life threatening.
The offending vehicle failed to stop and it continued at speed for eight kilometers on deflated tyres. The pursuit finally ended at Beachhaven wharf.
The vehicle was abandoned on the nearby mudflats and the occupants entered the water in an attempt to elude police. One suspect was apprehended. A search is in progress for two males and a female who were also in the vehicle. A 23 year old male is assisting police with their enquiries.
Police are urging residents in the coastal areas of Beachhaven, Greenhithe, and Hobsonville to be alert for any suspicious behaviour by the three persons being sought. Anyone with information is asked to call North Shore Police on 09 477 5000 or the confidential crime line 027 2727669.
