Group of students arrested in Hamilton

1 min read

Instead of tasting the rich bouquet of a fine wine seven Hamilton secondary students found themselves savouring the confines of a Police cell following their arrest on Friday.

Acting Sergeant Craig Berquist of the North Hamilton Police said the group, all students from the nearby Fairfield College, were arrested after being found in possession of items stolen earlier in the day from a Wymer Tce home.

"The local Fairfield Community Constable was doing his anti-truancy rounds in the nearby Donny Park when he came across the group.

"All seven have been charged with receiving stolen goods and inquiries are continuing to establish just who carried out the burglary and then stashed stolen alcohol in bushes in the park."

Mr Berquist said the majority of the property taken in the burglary was recovered, including an unopened $600 bottle of wine.

"The group have all been referred to our Youth Aid Section for follow up action."

"About 25 per cent of offending carried out in daylight hours can be attributed to young people who should be at school so we're happy to see the robust inter-agency approach to truancy adopted in Hamilton City appears to be working."
