Hamilton Police are commending members of the public for their support following a vicious daylight robbery that saw a young child and his mother dragged by a car today.
Senior Sergeant Kevin Anderson of Hamilton Police said an Asian woman had gone to use an ATM machine at shops on the corner of Bryant and Te Rapa Roads.
"She's then gone with her son into a store before getting into her car and reversing out of her car park.
"However as she's tried to reverse out her car has been blocked by a vehicle with two men in it, she's then tried to drive forward but the offenders have reached into her car and taken her bag and cellphone," said Mr Anderson.
The offenders' car was described as a burgundy or maroon 4-door-saloon.
The woman and her son have then chased the men's car on foot, both grabbing hold of the offender's car.
"She has then been dragged a short distance along the road and son, aged about 10, was punched in the face by one of the men, the thieves have then sped off.
"On a positive note Police received a lot of calls from members of the public and several bystanders, including a doctor, rushed to the pair's aid.
"The woman is currently being interviewed by detectives and we're following strong leads of enquiry," said Mr Anderson.
