Police arrested a man on the West Coast last night in connection with a death in Sydney last month.
A 35 year old man appeared in Greymouth District Court this morning after being arrested last night in Hokitika. He was arrested under a provisional warrant issued under the Extradition Act.
NSW Police Force detectives will fly to New Zealand in the coming days to seek the man's extradition to New South Wales following inquiries into the stabbing death of a 60-year-old man at Castle Hill, in Sydney's north-west on Friday 22 February. Josef Maskiewicz was found by a relative inside his house in Cambewarra Avenue about 1pm on Friday 22 February.
The arrest came as a result of extensive inquiries by Strike Force Hoskin, which comprises of detectives from The Hills Local Area Command and State Crime Command's Homicide Squad, and New Zealand Police.
The arrest of the New Zealand national was made after an off-duty police officer identified a car in the town as one previously circulated country-wide by Bay of Plenty police and contacted on duty officers who made the arrest around 9pm.
The man has been remanded in custody to appear in Rotorua District Court on Friday.
