Road Policing decision reinforces value of unified service

1 min read

Commissioner of Police, Howard Broad said today the Government's commitment to retaining a single, unified Police service reflected Police's submissions on the matter.

Mr Broad was commenting on the findings of a Government commissioned report which evaluated the costs and benefits of de-merging traffic enforcement from Police.

The report was discussed by Cabinet on Monday, with the Minister of Police announcing today that traffic enforcement will remain a function of New Zealand Police.

Mr Broad says the reports findings are in line with submissions Police made to the review group and remove any uncertainty about the role of road policing within NZ Police.

The decision reinforces the value of having a single national service where staff from any branch can be and are involved in providing a full range of policing services, he says.

For more details on the review and its findings go to Summary of review findings of de-merging traffic enforcement from Police on the SSC web site.
