Pedestrian dies after hit by bus

1 min read

Police are urging witnesses to an incident on Dominion Rd at 7.30 this morning, where a pedestrian was seriously injured and later died after being involved in a hit and run incident with a bus, to contact them.

The man, a middle-aged Asian, was hit when standing on or near the footpath on Dominion Rd, 20 metres south of St Albans Ave on the city-bound side.

The driver of the Stagecoach bus stopped at a bus stop slightly further along the road, got out and looked towards the injured man, then got back in the bus and continued on his journey.

Police located the driver sometime later but have not interviewed him. He is seeking legal advice.

Senior Constable Bryan Hensley of the Auckland City District Serious Crash Unit says the pedestrian has yet to be identified.

"He wasn't carrying any documentation on him at the time, but we're in the process of locating who we believe might be his next of kin," Mr Hensley said.

"We'd really like to speak to passengers who were on the bus at the time of the crash - about eight in all we're told - and to anyone else who saw the incident or who was in the area around the time it happened."

Anyone with information should contact Senior Constable Hensley on 09 359 3114.
