An Australasian conference on school based strategies for preventing child abuse and family violence will be held in Wellington on Monday 13 February, 2006 at the National Library.
The conference is organised by an inter agency group representing the Youth Education Service of the New Zealand Police, Child Youth and Family's Everyday Communities and the theatre group Applied Theatre Consultants.
The key speakers/highlights include:
• Amster Reddy (Ngati Porou) will speak on the importance of story and oriori when educating about issues of abuse and family violence.
• Professor Freda Briggs about a school's experience with dealing with child abuse. Professor Briggs received several awards for her internationally recognised work furthering the cause of protecting children.
• Dr Peter O'Connor from Everyday Theatre. The theatre group aim is to provide a safe place for children to discuss child abuse and family violence. They have achieved international recognition for groundbreaking work with school and community groups. The theatre team will work with Wellington students at the conference.
