Minister of Police Annette King will launch historian Susan Butterworth's book 'More than Law and Order' next Tuesday 22 November at 5.30-6.45pm. The launch will held at Archives New Zealand on 10 Mulgrave Street.
Butterworth's book covers the story of policing from 1945 to 1992 and includes the integration of Police with the Traffic Safety Service of the Ministry of Transport.
The forty-seven years covered by the book shows the role of the Police becoming much more complex as New Zealand's population increased and policing changed along with society. The role of women in Police, the development of forensics and communications systems, the emergence of specialist squads and the role of Police Search and Rescue are some of the developments examined by Butterworth.
Protests, difficult crime and tragedies are included and covered in detail - such as 1951 waterfront crisis, the 1979 plane crash on Mt Erebus, the 1980 pardon of Arthur Allan Thomas and the 1981 South African rugby tour.
More Than Law and Order will be of interest to people who lived through these years, and allows considered reflection of the role of the Police in the modern era.
