Sightings sought of silver car in Carterton shooting

1 min read

A silver sports type car was spotted last night driving away from outside a Carterton policeman's house shortly after a shot had been fired through the lounge window.

Detective Sergeant Mark McHattie, head of the Wairarapa CIB, says Constable Peter Cunningham was not long home from late shift at Carterton Police Station and was sitting in his lounge when the shot went through his window.

"Peter leapt up from his seat and looked out the window in time to see a late model silver sports type car driving away," Detective Sergeant McHattie says.

"We're appealing for sightings of cars fitting this description, and from people who may have seen the vehicle in the Kent Street and Connolly's Line area about 11.15pm to 11.30pm last night.

"Items have also been found within the scene that I am confident will help police identify the offender," says Detective Sergeant McHattie.

He says about 25 police are working on the inquiry, including some from Wellington who have been brought in to help. The detailed search of the scene will continue into the weekend.

It's not yet clear what prompted the shooting but fortunately the constable and his family weren't hurt.

Anyone who can help with the incident including sightings of the silver car, where it might be, and who might be responsible for the shooting, is asked to contact the investigation team at Masterton Police Station. The number is: 06 370 0300.
