The Southern Police District has a new District Commander. Deputy Commissioner Steve Long announced today that Superintendent George Fraser of Auckland will take up the command in mid January.
"Superintendent Fraser has broad experience in both Police operations and administration," said Mr Long.
"In earlier years Superintendent Fraser was actively involved in Search and Rescue and was part of the reconciliation team at the Auckland Mortuary for "Operation Overdue", the DC10 disaster on Mount Erebus in 1979.
"In 1995 he was the first Commissioned Officer appointed to a specialist area role in road policing when he became O/C Traffic Safety for the Eastern Area of Auckland City. Mr Fraser became Road Policing Manager for Auckland City District in 1999 and was appointed Area Commander of the Western Area in January 2003.
"He has performed very well in the Area Command role, implementing in a very real sense the Police strategy on crime and crash reduction with a strong focus on community relationships. I am sure he will bring his particular talents and skills to bear on his new District command role.
The District Command of Southern has been ably filled in recent months by several relieving commanders. The former District Commander Superintendent Nick Perry has been appointed National Manager Crime Services in the Office of the Commissioner.
The Southern Police District covers the Areas of Dunedin City, Southland and Otago Rural.
