Road closures associated with the Return of the Unknown Warrior ceremonies are resulting in heavy traffic congestion in central Wellington.
As at 10.30am there was up to an hour’s delay for motorists travelling from the eastern suburbs/Wellington Airport area into the central city as Buckle Street, part of State Highway 1 and a main arterial route, is closed until 6pm.
Diversions are signposted and in place with the suggested route for traffic heading north from the eastern and southern suburbs to travel down Cambridge Terrace.
Police are reminding motorists to be patient as delays will also be expected during the lunchtime period when the Unknown Warrior procession will travel from St Paul’s Cathedral, along Lambton Quay and through the CBD to Taranaki Street and Buckle Street to the National War Memorial.
Police, Wellington City Council traffic control staff and Military Police will be manning intersections to allow the procession to travel smoothly along the route.
Intersections will be reopened once the procession has passed through.
A reminder that Buckle Street is closed until 6pm – peak time traffic is urged to take alternative routes.
Motorists are also reminded of the temporary no parking restrictions that apply in the city.
