The Japanese student whose body was found in the Heathcote River last Saturday was injured before he went into the water.
Detective Inspector Greg Williams, the head of the inquiry, said today that the inquiry team had made significant progress in the six days since the body of Yasuaki Shishikura, 23, of Japan was found.
"We are now satisfied that the injuries Mr Shishikura suffered did not occur when he entered the river," Detective Inspector Williams said.
Police will have more information early next week when they obtain further forensic evidence. ESR scientists and a pathologist have been back at the scene this week assisting police determine how the injuries were caused.
On Wednesday the police urged several witnesses who may hold information to come forward. One of the witnesses, a cyclist, has done so.
Police still want to hear from a couple seen in Clarendon Terrace on Saturday morning about 7am.
They parked their red, low, sports style car and crossed the road to river. It was near the Clarendon Terrace –MacKenzie Street intersection.
The couple were both in their 20s. The female was wearing light coloured clothes and an off-white short skirt. She was European, with dark black hair. Her hair appeared to be slightly curly and may have been in a bob style.
The male had short brown hair, and was wearing fawn long pants and a dark-coloured T-shirt or skivvy.
They were driving a modern low-style sports car, racing red colour, and in the place of a front numberplate was an emblem, which resembled the American flag.
Mr Shishikura’s family has now returned to Japan. Detective Inspector Williams would like to thank the media for respecting the family’s privacy while they were in Christchurch.
