Storm damage and disruptions to roads are keeping police officers busy across the Wellington Police District.
Late this morning police started evacuating homes in Riverside Drive South, Waiwhetu, after the Waiwhetu Stream burst its banks and started affecting properties already hit in last February’s big flood.
Homes between Wainui Road and Bell Road were being evacuated by police and fire staff, with residents either going to family or friends, or to the Petone Workingmen’s Club in Udy Street.
Senior Sergeant Warren Harris, Lower Hutt Police, says buses are being used to transport those being evacuated. It’s not yet clear how many people will need to be shifted out.
Marine Parade has also been closed, isolating Eastbourne. The Rimutaka Hill Road is still closed.
Two homes were evacuated in Thompson Drive, Porirua East, this morning after localised flooding.
Roofing iron, fallen power lines, trees and other debris including surface flooding are making driving conditions difficult throughout the Wellington region including the Wairarapa.
Police are appealing to motorists to be extremely careful on the roads, especially in exposed areas.
