A man has been flown to Wellington Hospital with pelvic injuries after a shooting incident in Wainuiomata about 4pm this afternoon.
Details are still sketchy but Inspector Pete Cowan, acting Lower Hutt Area Commander, says police are currently speaking with a second man in relation to the shooting.
Inspector Cowan says police received multiple 111 calls from members of the public concerned about the activities of a man outside an August Avenue house. The calls included reports of shots being heard.
"Police, including the Armed Offenders Squad, responded and found a person with firearms injuries at the scene. Paramedics were called and the person has since been airlifted to hospital," Inspector Cowan says.
The extent of the man’s injuries is not yet known but he is understood to be in a stable condition.
Inspector Cowan says a man believed to be involved in the shooting is now in police custody and officers are speaking with about 20 witnesses from the community.
"It’s too early to comment on what prompted the shooting but we believe it to be domestic related," Inspector Cowan says.
