Morning commuter traffic is heavy on both State Highways heading into Wellington city and motorists can expect a slow trip.
A convoy of vehicles associated with the Hikoi was guided by police from Porirua into the city, arriving by 7am at Te Papa. At times the convoy stretched 2km but no problems were reported.
Two hundred vehicles from the Wairarapa are now travelling on State Highway 2 into the city, again being escorted by police. The
General traffic is slow and it could be 8.30am to 9am before the convoy gets into the city.
Te Papa’s carpark was full of vehicles by 6am today.
The police plea to all motorists coming into the city:
• Warning diversion signs will be in place around the Basin Reserve when march from Newtown Park goes through. That march is leaving at 8am. Go slow when you pass the marchers who will be walking on one lane
• Suggested diversions are Buckle Street, Taranaki Street, Vivian Street and motorway
• Traffic coming in from the north use The Terrace tunnel motorway, Ghuznee Street.
• Cable Street will be closed from about 8.30am – follow the diversion signs, stick to the western side of the city if possible. If you are caught in snarl ups, be patient.
