David, Principal Assurance Advisor
I started out as a soldier, then went to university, spent time working at the Ministry of Defence, consulting at the likes of Telecom, the Law Society, Institute of Directors and now Police’s Assurance Group. So, I have made a career of managing risks, building trust and confidence in how ethics are managed, governance support and advising on privacy matters.
In the Assurance Group, our team works to keep Police safe across a whole bunch of areas – organisational security, data quality and integrity, standards, and policies. We’re all about making it easier for people to do the right thing.
Much of my day job is helping support staff and leaders make good decisions about complex personal information issues. For me, the challenge is helping those at the front end strike the right balance.
Police are great to work with: folk here are used to acting decisively under pressure that will withstand court scrutiny. If there is a complexity it is that we are a big unit of many moving parts, so my challenge is to craft advice that is practical, to the point, and easy to grasp.
In my spare time I am into cooking, especially finding the ultimate cheese scone recipe, and I also enjoy keeping fit by running and regularly going to the gym.
I am about to move to the Ministry of Justice for a secondment to the Criminal Procedure Implementation Process or CPIP. This programme is to improve the backlog of cases going through the District Courts throughout New Zealand.
