Woman's attacker detained by neighbours

1 min read

A young man who stepped in to stop an attack on a woman by a man known to her in Mt Roskill last evening is being hailed a Good Samaritan by Police.

The 26 year-old observed a woman in a car outside her address being punched through the driver's window by a man standing alongside the vehicle, at about 8.45pm.

The Good Samaritan confronted and subdued the attacker and managed, with the help of neighbours, to detain him until Police arrived a short time later.

Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Fabish of Avondale CIB says the young man's efforts were gutsy and, although he was checked for injury to his hand, he came out of the ordeal comparatively unscathed.

"The woman was treated in hospital for her injuries and we're all grateful they were less serious than they could have been had the young man not intervened.

"Once again, we are heartened to know that people are prepared to assist neighbours or even strangers who are clearly in distress."

A 33 year old North Shore man will appear in the Auckland District Court today charged with assault, injuring and contravening a Protection Order.
