Police are appealing for any witnesses to a fatal crash near Wairoa yesterday involving four members of the Mongrel Mob.
One man has died, one was injured and two remain unaccounted for after their vehicle ran off the road yesterday afternoon near the Mohaka Viaduct and plunged down a bank into the Mohaka River. The police dive squad is currently searching the river for the two men who were in the car. The injured man was discharged from Wairoa Hospital last night.
Detective Sergeant Brent Greville said police were keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the crash or noticed any other vehicles on the stretch of road near the top of the hill before the approach to the viaduct around 2.30pm-2.45pm yesterday.
"There may be a possibility that another car was involved. It's an aspect we need to look into as part of the investigation so we would like to talk to anyone who may have seen anything unusual on that section of the highway during that time," Mr Greville said.
The car remains submerged in the Mohaka River and a crane is likely to be used to try to retrieve it from the water later today.
The highway is currently reduced to one lane in the area and motorists are asked to drive cautiously around the viaduct area.
Police know the identities of those involved in the crash and are liaising with their families. Their names will not be released at this stage.
