Wellington Police operation closes roads briefly

1 min read

Police closed some central Wellington streets for approximately 40 minutes at 5am this morning while a police operation was underway.   Diversions were in place, but have since been lifted and the traffic is flowing again.

A police operation involving search warrants was executed however, there are no threats to members of the public.

Police undertook a number of inquiries at several Wellington addresses but did not locate anything therefore the cordons were lifted shortly after.

This was a result of receiving information in relation to clandestine methamphetamine laboratories.

Detective Senior Sergeant Pete Mallon says “In this instance we are happy that there was in fact no risk to the public from a ‘clan lab’ and we will continue to take active action to try and reduce risk to the public from potential risks that these labs pose.  Communities want and deserve a safe place to live, and they can be assured that we will remain focused and motivated to tackle this issue.”

Indicators that an address may be used for drug manufacture are; strange chemical smells and vapour escaping from windows or ventilators, sealed windows and unusual activity. If you suspect you have found a lab, get away from the area immediately and notify police.  Landlords of rental properties are reminded to thoroughly check and vet their potential tenants.

Any members of the public who may identify people or places involved in illegal activities can call their local police station or information can be provided anonymously by ringing Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
