Wellington Police are warning motorists to drive carefully as the capital and surrounding areas experience extreme weather conditions.
State Highway 2 Rimutaka Hill has been closed due to snow, ice and high winds and other roads around the region are experiencing similar conditions.
Wainuiomata Road is also experiencing ice and wind over the hill and drivers are asked to be extra careful on this road.
Drivers are reminded to take care while driving, drive to the conditions, reduce their speed and increase their following distances between vehicles. If at all possible, Police ask motorists to delay any non-essential travel.
Police also ask those driving in urban areas to be mindful of other road users who may not be easily seen, such as cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.
