Waitakere Police reinforce safety messages

1 min read

Police are reiterating the message to children to never get into a car with a stranger and commending the actions of a young girl following an incident in Waitakere yesterday.

An 11 year old girl reported that a man made a suspicious approach towards her while she waited for the school bus at around 8:30am on Wednesday morning (23 November) in the Wairere Road, Waitakere area.

The man is described as in his 30s, not tanned, skinny and tall with curly brown hair, driving a dark red or maroon 4x4 type vehicle.

Police commend the girl’s actions in refusing to engage in conversation with the man and running back towards her home where family members were.

It was reported to Police later in the afternoon.

“The message we would like parents to pass on to their children is that if you are approached by anyone who you don’t know or trust, run away to the nearest public place or shop and find someone who can call 111 immediately,” says Detective Senior Sergeant Kim Libby.

“We can also reassure the public that based on the information we have at this stage of the investigation, this is being treated as an isolated incident.  We are hoping to be able to identify the man involved as soon as possible.”

Police units have been in the area this morning talking to people in the area who may be able to assist with the investigation.

Anyone who can assist with the investigation or may be able to identify the man involved is asked to call Police on 09 426 4555 or information can be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
