Canterbury Police are now able to confirm that man recovered from the excavator which was engulfed by fallen rocks on Monday (8 June 2015) morning was 56 year old Murray George Taylor from Hurunui.
The death has been referred to the Coroner.
Inspector Corrie Parnell said “Murray’s family are absolutely devastated and are being supported by Canterbury Police and Victim Support. They have asked for privacy and provided a statement for media and a cherished family photograph.”
A spokesperson from Murray’s family says “Murray Taylor was a loved and dearly treasured man. His family would like to say a enormous thank you to the police particularly Inspector Corrie Parnell and Senior Sergeant Paul Reeves for their constant hard work and care throughout this difficult time. This big thank you extends to the recovery team and everyone involved. We will hold a funeral for Murray’s family and friends and ask that the media do not attend as this is a very personal and emotional time for us.”
“This tragic event has affected not only Murray’s family but the wider community in Hurunui. Canterbury Police extend their condolences to those that knew Murray and would like to thank everyone who helped to recover him safely.” Says Inspector Parnell.
Canterbury Police and WorkSafe NZ investigations are continuing.
The quarry site and equipment was officially handed over to WorkSafe NZ last night. There is not access to the quarry which is subject to the prohibition notice issued by WorkSafe NZ.
