Update on Waikato pedestrian fatality

1 min read

Waikato Police investigating the death of a man on a rural highway early on Sunday morning say it appears the victim may have been lying on the road prior to suffering his fatal injuries.

In expressing the sympathies of NZ Police to the family of 32-year-old man, Derek Douglas EVERAARTS, District Road Policing Manager Inspector Freda Grace said the incident was still under investigation by the Waikato Serious Crash Unit.

“Initial indications however suggest Mr EVERAARTS may have been prone when he was run over by two northbound trucks travelling in convoy on SH39 shortly before 1am and the drivers of both vehicles are cooperating fully with Police.

“There is still a lot more investigative work and analysis to be completed on this incident and it would be inappropriate to elaborate further at this stage. What I can say however is that Sunday’s tragedy serves to remind us that all road users are vulnerable, no matter if you are on foot, two, four or even more wheels.”
