Detective Superintendent Mike Pannett is returning to Washington DC where he will continue to closely monitor a pending decision from the Brazilian authorities on the process to return Phillip Smith to New Zealand.
“Arrangements have been made between myself, the Brazil Federal Police, the New Zealand Embassy and justice officials to be alerted when there is any change to the current situation.” said Mr Pannett.
“We have a very good relationship with the Brazilian authorities. The Brazil Federal Police, along with New Zealand officials, are ready to respond when we need to.”
“We respect Brazil’s justice system and we are working within their timeframes and processes." said Mr Pannett.
The Brazilian authorities are deciding whether the process to return Mr Smith will be one of deportation or extradition. He can also elect to return voluntarily to New Zealand.
Phillip Smith remains in custody at the Bandeira Stampa Public Prison in Rio de Janeiro.
