Update on Operation Shakespeare - Arrest made

Police have arrested a 22-year-old Northland resident on a charge of murder in relation to the death of Mr Lee Rata.

Mr Rata died in Whangarei Hospital on New Year’s Day from injuries received after an assault in Kaitaia on New Year’s Eve in Bonnett Road, Kaitaia.

The man will be appearing in the Whangarei District Court today.

A total of 22 staff including five staff from Waikato, Counties Manukau, Auckland and Waitematä Districts continue to work on the inquiry to help with the large number of witnesses who need to be located and spoken to.

"Police would like to thank the Kaitaia community for the information they have provided, which has led to this arrest," said Detective Inspector Kevin Burke.

"The investigation continues as we establish exactly what has occurred and if any other people are involved. The family of Mr Rata is very pleased with the progress so far".

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the victim earlier in the evening and people who were in the Bonnett Road area attending a party to contact them on 09  408 6500.   Alternatively, if you wish to pass information anonymously please contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
