Update to Invercargill incident

1 min read

A 50 year-old woman remains in a serious but stable condition in Dunedin Hospital after suffering a gunshot wound during an incident at a residential property on Otatara Road last night.

Police were called just after 6:30pm after receiving reports that someone had been shot. The woman was transferred to hospital with critical injuries.

Early this morning Police entered the same address on Otatara Road of the 29 year-old man who was believed to be involved in the shooting incident, where they found his body.

He is suspected to have suffered a self-inflicted injury and his death has now been referred to the Coroner.

Police have today completed the formal identification process for the deceased and can confirm he was Kevin Johnston of Invercargill.

Police can confirm the woman was the only other person injured in this incident.

“I would like to again thank the Otatara community for their cooperation and patience while police attended the incident last night,” says Southland Area Commander, Inspector Joel Lamb.

“Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time,” says Mr Lamb.

As the matter has now been referred to the Coroner Police is unable to comment further.
