Please attribute to Inspector Adam Pyne, Counties Manukau Central Area Prevention Manager:
Police have arrested two people in relation to an incident in Homai yesterday evening where a group of people were fighting.
The two men, aged 21 and 25 have been issued with a pre-charge warning for disorderly behaviour.
We have identified two others involved and are following up with them and their families. One was a 15-year-old boy, he was taken to Middlemore Hospital last night but has since been released.
As we are still in the process of gathering CCTV and cell phone footage it is too early to say exactly how many people were involved but we estimate that around 15 people were present at the time.
Inspector Adam Pyne says police have a strong working relationship with all schools in the Manurewa area. We are working closely with Manurewa High School regarding this incident and I would like to acknowledge the assistance they have been providing police and in general, how open they are to working with police to educate students on the dangers of fighting.
The behaviour in this video is completely unacceptable but this is not an issue just for schools or police. This is a community issue. Parents and caregivers need to be making sure that they know where their children are outside of school hours and who they are associating with.
Manurewa High School Principal, Pete Jones says the school will continue to assist police as necessary and would like to echo the comments that this behaviour is unacceptable.
“We have a fantastic community in Manurewa and it is a shame that these types of events can over shadow the positive things which are happening in Counties Manukau.”
Police ask anyone with information that can assist police to please contact Detective Sergeant Gareth Brown on 09 261 1300. Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. You can also send us a private Facebook message.
