The identity of the person found on a boat in Nelson last week has been confirmed as 55-year-old John Murray Morton of Nelson. He occupied one of the three boats that frequent this area of the harbour.
Police were able to remove his body from the scene last evening and a post mortem is being carried out at Christchurch today.
Police are continuing the scene examination today. The road is now fully open although speed restrictions are still in place and Police are grateful for the patience shown by motorists using the area.
Police continue to speak to witnesses and known associates of Mr Morton and are building a picture of his movements prior to his body being discovered on Thursday morning.
While we have received a number of calls from the public in response to requests for information we would still like to hear from anyone who knew Mr Morton or may have information in relation to his death.
Information can be provided to Nelson Police on (03) 546 3840 or anonymously to CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.
