Counties Manukau Police have arrested a man after two men were seen behaving suspiciously at a property in Mangere this morning.
A member of the public called 111 when it was suspected that the two men were not meant to be on the property. A Police unit was quickly dispatched and one of the men was located nearby and arrested.
It was established that the man had previously been charged with burglary of the same address, and was breaching his bail conditions by being at the property.
Counties Manukau Police West Area Commander Inspector Jason Hewett says the vigilance of the member of the public who called 111 ensured that a burglary was prevented and the arrest was made.
“It’s great to be able to apprehend this burglar and prevent another burglary at this property or other properties in the area.”
Anyone who sees suspicious activity is encouraged to call 111 to allow Police to respond accordingly, Inspector Hewett says.
“We remind everyone to call 111 when they see something suspicious. In many cases when we receive information like this it can prevent a burglary, like it did this morning. If you see something in your neighbourhood that you consider to be out of the ordinary, please let us know as soon as possible by calling 111. This could include someone looking into car windows or a person loitering in the street who you think doesn't have any reason to be there.
“We would always prefer to prevent crime before it happens and we are grateful to the member of the public who acted quickly and let us know what was happening in their neighbourhood.”
People with information on crime are also encouraged to contact the organisation Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
A 20 year old man will appear in Manukau District Court charged with breaching his bail conditions. Police are following positive lines of inquiry to locate the second man seen at the property.
