Police Commissioner Mike Bush says staff and community safety continues to be a top priority for Police, after shots were fired at an officer during an incident in Counties Manukau early this morning.
“While Police efforts are very firmly focused on finding those responsible as soon as possible, it’s an important reminder that our staff work in a dynamic and at times risky environment, and I’m I am relieved that none of our staff or the public were hurt during this violent incident.
“It’s of huge concern to me and my executive any time that criminals threaten staff or the public with firearms, and shows we can never be complacent when dealing with these incidents.
“This is why the safety of our staff and the public will always be our top priority, and we continue to closely monitor our operating environment to make sure our staff have the right tools and training to do the job and to keep people safe. As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, as with any other critical incident, there will be a thorough investigation into this morning’s events – and I can assure the public that any lessons learnt will be taken on board to help inform future responses.
“Dealing with armed offenders is among the most dangerous and high risk situations that our staff encounter, and I acknowledge those of our staff who respond courageously to these incidents to keep the community safe.
“As for anyone who confronts our staff or the public with firearms, I strongly urge them to think again, as they risk extremely serious consequences. While firearms are always a last resort for Police, our staff have a duty to protect themselves and the public from those who threaten them with firearms and we remain very well trained and equipped to provide an armed response to contain that threat.”
