Statement from Detective Inspector Greg Williams following verdict in the trial of Mauha Fawcett
[Fawcett was this morning found guilty of murder]
Today's verdict will bring some measure of relief to the family and friends of Mallory Manning. At the same time, however, we are very much aware that the case remains open and the investigation is ongoing.
As was heard during the trial, there are clearly other individuals who were involved in Mallory's death. Significant effort on the part of Police is continuing to bring these other offenders to justice.
We are continuing to gather evidence, including DNA samples, and to speak to people who have come forward with information.
The assistance of members of the public who contacted Police and who have given evidence in court has been critical to the case so far, and the importance of their contribution cannot be understated.
We continue to ask for the public's assistance and appeal for anyone with information on Mallory's death to come forward to Police.
Today's outcome has been the result of more than five years' detailed and comprehensive work from the inquiry team, which numbered up to 40 full-time staff at the peak of the investigation.
From the outset this has been a complex and challenging investigation with multiple strands of work. Despite limited forensic evidence, investigators assembled a robust case based on evidence gathered from a variety of sources.
I also want to pay tribute to Mallory's partner and family, for the patience and courage they have shown throughout the investigation and for their support and assistance to Police.
Detective Inspector Greg Williams
