A man shot in a hunting accident in Central Hawke's Bay today was a soldier at Linton Military Camp.
The 25-year-old man was hunting with two Army friends and a dog in the Ruahine Ranges this morning when he was accidentally shot by another hunter, who was not part of his hunting party. The dead man's name will not be released until all family have been notified.
Police are currently speaking with the man who was involved in the shooting and one of the dead man's hunting companions who walked out of the bush with an injured dog. The dog was injured in the shooting but is believed to be still alive.
The other member of the man's hunting party remains at the scene with the dead man. Police say the body will remain in the bush overnight. A scene examination is currently underway.
