Canterbury Police are at the scene of a fatal crash which has closed SH8 between the Lake Pukaki Visitor Centre and the Mt Cook Road.
The two vehicle crash is reported to have occurred shortly before 2.15pm this afternoon and diversions are in place. Police urge the public to avoid the area where possible as delays are likely.
One person has been confirmed as deceased at the scene and another is being taken to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter in a serious condition.
Canterbury Police Serious Crash Unit are on route to undertake a scene examination.
The road is expected to be closed until this evening at the earliest.
The death has been referred to the Coroner. No details of the deceased will be released until formal identification and the process to inform next of kin has been completed.
A number of people took photographs of the scene while others tried to help those involved. Canterbury Police urge those members of the public who did take photographs to call 03 687 9808 to supply copies to Police.
Canterbury Police will not be making any further comment at this time.
Police hope to be in a position to release an update at some point tomorrow.
