Serious Crash Te Anau Milford Highway - Final Update

Southern District Police are now able to formally release the names of the two women who died as a result of a motor vehicle accident on the Te Anau - Milford Highway on 26 February, 2016.

 

They are: Julia MAYER and Kathrin SCHMITT, both aged 19.  Both are German nationals.

 

Investigating Police would like to point out that that there was absolutely no fault on behalf of either Ms MAYER or SCHMITT that contributed to this tragic accident. 

 

Enquiries have revealed that at about 4.30pm Ms MAYER and SCHMITT were travelling north on the Te Anau – Milford Highway near the area of Cascade Creek.  As they drove on the road a beech tree has fallen and struck their car. 

 

New Zealand Police extend their condolences to Ms MAYER and SCHMITTS families and friends.
